0A.70.20

Massey Ferguson 0A.70.20 – Implement Control Module (ICM) or Tractor Control Unit (TCU): External Hydraulic Valve 7 Issue

Issue description

Malfunction or communication failure associated with the 7th external hydraulic remote/auxiliary spool valve on the tractor, often indicating an electrical fault such as an open circuit, short circuit, or a failed solenoid.

Check the cause

  1. Connect a compatible Massey Ferguson diagnostic tool to confirm 0A.70.20 is active and check for any secondary codes (e.g., voltage or CAN bus errors)

  2. Locate External Hydraulic Valve 7 on the rear remote valve stack and inspect the electrical connector for dirt, moisture, corrosion, or pushed-back pins

  3. Trace the wiring harness from Valve 7 back to the control module, looking for chafing, breaks, or rodent damage

  4. Use a multimeter to check the resistance of the solenoid coil on Valve 7 to ensure it is not shorted or open

  5. Ensure the tractor has adequate hydraulic fluid levels and that the hydraulic filters are not restricted

Repair steps

  1. Relieve Pressure

Turn off the tractor and cycle the hydraulic controls to relieve all residual hydraulic pressure in the system.

  2. Disconnect Battery

Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts during the repair.

  3. Remove Connections

Disconnect the electrical harness connector from External Hydraulic Valve 7. Disconnect and cap the hydraulic lines attached to the valve to prevent fluid loss and contamination.

  4. Remove the Valve

Unbolt the tie-rods or mounting bolts holding the valve stack together or securing Valve 7 to the manifold. Carefully slide the faulty spool valve out, ensuring you do not lose or damage the O-rings between the valve slices.

  5. Install New Valve

Lubricate the new O-rings with clean hydraulic fluid. Position the new external hydraulic valve into the stack and torque the mounting bolts to the manufacturer's specifications.

  6. Reconnect

Reattach the hydraulic lines and plug in the electrical connector.

  7. Test

Reconnect the battery, start the tractor, and top off the hydraulic fluid if necessary. Use the diagnostic tool to clear the 0A.70.20 code. Operate the #7 remote to ensure proper function and check for leaks.
