0A.73.18

Massey Ferguson 0A.73.18 – Transmission/Tractor Electronic Control Unit (TECU) or Autotronic module: External Hydraulic Valve 7 Issue

Issue description

This is an electrical fault code indicating a connection problem on the circuit for the 7th external hydraulic remote valve (spool valve 7). The underlying condition is typically an open circuit, a short to ground, or a short to power within the valve's solenoid circuit, which prevents the controller from operating the valve properly.

Check the cause

  1. Check the solenoid connector at external valve 7 for corrosion, moisture, or bent pins

  2. Trace the wiring harness back from the valve to the ECU to look for rub points, melted insulation, or breaks

  3. Use a multimeter to test the solenoid coil resistance and verify ground integrity

  4. Ensure the hydraulic fluid (UTTO) is clean and at the correct level, and verify that the hydraulic/transmission filters are not blocked

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

Power down the tractor, engage the parking brake, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during repair.

  2. Relieve Pressure

Relieve all hydraulic system pressure by moving the remote control levers/joysticks through all positions.

  3. Access the Valve

Locate the external hydraulic valve stack at the rear of the tractor and identify the section for Valve 7.

  4. Wiring Repair

If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire or damaged connector, splice in a new connector pigtail or repair the harness rub point.

  5. Solenoid/Valve Replacement

If the solenoid coil failed the resistance test, remove the retaining nut and replace the coil. If the spool valve itself is internally shorted or mechanically jammed, unbolt the valve section from the hydraulic block.

  6. Reassembly

Clean the mating surfaces, install new O-rings/seals (using a hydraulic repair kit), and mount the replacement spool valve. Torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications.

  7. Fluid Top-Up

Reconnect the electrical harness and battery. Top up the hydraulic fluid (UTTO) to replace any lost during the swap.

  8. Clear Codes

Test the remote valve operation and use a compatible Massey Ferguson diagnostic tool to clear the 0A.73.18 DTC from the system.
