Massey Ferguson 0A.80.18: External Hydraulic Valve 8 Issue
Issue description
This code indicates a malfunction or communication failure specifically related to the 8th external hydraulic remote valve (spool valve). It typically points to an electrical fault (such as an open circuit, short to ground, or short to power at the solenoid) or a mechanical issue where the valve is sticking, jamming, or failing to actuate properly, resulting in slow, weak, or dead hydraulic response at that specific remote.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness leading to External Hydraulic Valve 8 for rub points, damaged wires, or a loose solenoid connector
Measure the coil resistance of the Valve 8 solenoid and verify ground integrity to rule out an electrical short or open circuit
Inspect the hydraulic/transmission fluid level and condition, looking for dirty or contaminated oil (e.g., metal shavings or water) which can cause valves to stick
Check if the hydraulic or transmission filters are blocked
Inspect the valve block for visible external leaks, damaged couplers, or signs of physical jamming
Repair steps
Secure the Machine
Park the tractor on level ground, lower all implements to relieve hydraulic pressure, and turn off the engine.
Address Electrical Faults First
If the diagnostic checks revealed a wiring issue, repair the broken wire or clean the corroded connector at Valve 8. If the solenoid coil failed the resistance test, replace the solenoid. Clear the code and test operation.
Service the Fluid/Filters
If the oil is contaminated, drain the hydraulic fluid, flush the system, and replace the hydraulic/transmission filters. Refill with clean, OEM-specified UTTO fluid.
Valve Cleaning/Replacement
If the electrical circuit is sound but the valve remains unresponsive or sticks: Remove the External Hydraulic Valve 8 assembly from the remote valve stack. Inspect the spool for scoring, debris, or worn seals. Clean the valve thoroughly. If it is heavily worn or damaged, replace the entire spool valve assembly or rebuild it using a hydraulic valve repair kit.
Reassembly and Testing
Reinstall the valve, reconnect the hydraulic lines and electrical connectors, and run the tractor to operating temperature to verify that Valve 8 responds correctly without leaking or throwing the 0A.80.18 code.
