Issue description

Fault code 0A.82.20 indicates a malfunction or communication failure with External Hydraulic Valve 8 (typically a rear remote spool valve). The onboard diagnostic system has detected that the valve is not responding correctly to electronic commands. This condition is usually caused by an electrical connection problem at the valve solenoid, a stuck or jammed spool valve due to contaminated hydraulic fluid, a failed solenoid, or restricted oil flow from a blocked filter.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the hydraulic fluid level and condition, and check for a blocked hydraulic or transmission filter (a primary cause of weak or dead remote hydraulics)

  2. Inspect the wiring harness leading to External Valve 8 for chafed wires, loose pins, or corrosion inside the solenoid connector

  3. Check if the valve is physically sticking or binding, which can be caused by overheating in the hydraulic system

  4. Check for visible fluid leaks around the valve body and quick couplers that could reduce system pressure

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize the system

    Turn off the tractor and cycle the hydraulic controls to relieve all residual pressure in the system before unbolting any components.

  2. Clean the area

    Thoroughly clean the exterior of the hydraulic valve block (Valve 8) to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system during removal.

  3. Disconnect electricals

    Unplug the electrical connector from the Valve 8 solenoid. Apply dielectric grease if the contacts are intact but slightly dirty.

  4. Remove the valve

    Unbolt the hydraulic lines/hoses connected to the valve. Remove the mounting bolts securing the spool valve to the manifold block.

  5. Inspect and clean

    If the valve was sticking, attempt to disassemble the spool, clean it with solvent, and replace the internal O-rings. If the spool is scored or the solenoid has failed electronically, the valve must be replaced.

  6. Install the new valve

    Mount the replacement spool valve assembly. Torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications.

  7. Reconnect and bleed

    Reconnect the hydraulic lines and the electrical harness. Top up the hydraulic fluid to replace any lost during the swap.

  8. Clear codes and test

    Use a compatible Massey Ferguson diagnostic tool to clear the 0A.82.20 / 0A.82.21 code from the ECU. Test the remote valve with an implement to ensure proper flow and pressure.
