Massey Ferguson 0B.02.15 – Mid Mount Valve Module: Loader Mid Mount Electro Valve Solenoid High Amp Draw

Issue description

The control module is detecting an electrical current (amperage) on the loader's mid-mount valve solenoid circuit that exceeds the maximum allowable threshold. This condition is almost always caused by a short circuit.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Harness Inspection: Trace the wiring harness from the Mid Mount Valve Module to the loader valve block. Look for pinched wires, melted insulation, or areas where the harness may have rubbed against the tractor chassis, causing a short to ground.

  2. Connector Check: Disconnect the plug at the affected mid-mount valve solenoid. Inspect for water ingress, corrosion, or melted pins that could be bridging the power and ground circuits.

  3. Solenoid Resistance Test (Ohm Test): Using a digital multimeter, measure the resistance across the pins of the solenoid coil. Compare the reading to a known-good solenoid on the same valve block. A reading of zero (or near zero) ohms, or continuity between the power pin and the solenoid's metal casing, confirms the solenoid coil is internally shorted and must be replaced.

  4. Voltage Drop / Harness Test: With the solenoid disconnected, turn the key on and activate the loader joystick. Verify that the module is sending the correct voltage to the connector and that the circuit is not shorting out before it reaches the valve.

Repair steps

  1. Secure the Machine

    Lower the loader boom and bucket completely to the ground to relieve all hydraulic pressure. Turn off the tractor and remove the key.

  2. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent any accidental electrical spikes during the repair.

  3. Locate the Valve

    Locate the mid-mount valve block, typically mounted on the right side of the tractor chassis below the cab.

  4. Clean the Area

    Thoroughly clean the area around the affected solenoid to prevent dirt or debris from entering the hydraulic system.

  5. Remove the Solenoid

    Disconnect the electrical harness plug from the solenoid. Remove the retaining nut or screw at the end of the valve stem that holds the solenoid coil in place.

  6. Swap the Coil

    Slide the faulty solenoid coil off the hydraulic valve cartridge. (Note: You usually do not need to remove the hydraulic cartridge itself, meaning no hydraulic fluid should leak).

  7. Install the New Part

    Slide the new solenoid coil onto the stem. Reinstall and tighten the retaining nut (do not overtighten, as this can crack the plastic casing of the new coil).

  8. Reconnect and Test

    Plug the electrical connector back in, reconnect the battery, start the tractor, and test the loader joystick to ensure the high amp draw code is cleared and full functionality is restored.
