Massey Ferguson 10.01.10 – AIRCON: Air Conditioning Evaporator Temperature Sensor Short Circuit

Issue description

The controller has detected that the voltage signal from the A/C evaporator temperature sensor has dropped below the permissible range, indicating a short to ground in the sensor itself or its wiring circuit. When this fault is active, the system will automatically disable the air conditioning compressor to prevent the evaporator core from freezing over.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the evaporator temperature sensor wiring harness (often routed near the HVAC blower housing in the cab roof or under the dash, depending on the tractor model). Inspect the harness for pinched wires, chafing against metal brackets, or melted insulation that could cause a short to ground.

  2. Perform a sensor resistance test: disconnect the sensor from the wiring harness. Use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the two pins of the sensor. If the reading is near zero ohms (continuity), the thermistor inside the sensor has failed and is internally shorted.

  3. Perform a harness voltage/short test: with the sensor disconnected, turn the tractor ignition ON. Measure the voltage at the harness connector (typically a 5V reference signal). Check for continuity between the signal wire and chassis ground; if there is continuity while disconnected, the wiring harness is shorted and must be repaired.

  4. Inspect the connector pins for moisture, corrosion, or debris that could be bridging the terminals and causing a false short circuit.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the Evaporator

    Remove the necessary cab interior panels or roof cap to access the HVAC evaporator housing.

  3. Remove the Faulty Sensor

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the evaporator temperature sensor. The sensor probe is typically inserted directly into the aluminum fins of the evaporator core. Carefully pull the probe straight out to avoid bending or damaging the delicate evaporator fins.

  4. Wiring Repair

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a short in the wiring harness, cut out the damaged section of wire, solder in a replacement section, and seal it with heat-shrink tubing.

  5. Install the New Sensor

    Gently insert the new sensor probe into the exact same location in the evaporator core. Ensure it is seated to the correct depth so it accurately reads the core temperature.

  6. Reassembly

    Reconnect the sensor's electrical plug. Reinstall all cab panels and covers.

  7. Clear Codes and Test

    Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition on and use a diagnostic scan tool (or the tractor's onboard dashboard diagnostic menu) to clear the 10.01.10 fault code. Start the tractor and turn the A/C to maximum cooling to verify the compressor engages and the code does not return.
