Massey Ferguson 10.02.10 – AIRCON: Air Conditioning Evaporator Temperature Sensor Short Circuit (AIRCON)

Issue description

The system has detected that the voltage signal from the A/C evaporator temperature sensor is below the permissible range, indicating a short circuit (either internally in the sensor or a short to ground in the wiring harness). When this fault is active, the system registers an impossible temperature value, causing the air conditioning compressor to be disabled to prevent the evaporator core from freezing over.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Locate the sensor wiring harness (typically routed into the cab roof or HVAC box where the evaporator is housed). Inspect for pinched wires, chafing, or melted insulation that could cause a short to ground.

  2. Connector Check: Disconnect the sensor. Inspect the connector pins for moisture, corrosion, or bent pins that could bridge the circuit.

  3. Open Circuit Test: With the sensor disconnected, turn the key ON and check the active fault codes. If the code changes from a 'Short Circuit' (10.02.10) to an 'Open Circuit' (10.00.09), the wiring harness and AIRCON module are functioning correctly, and the sensor itself is internally shorted.

  4. Multimeter Test: Measure the resistance (Ohms) across the two pins of the disconnected sensor. A reading of near zero ohms confirms the sensor is internally shorted and must be replaced.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal.

  2. Access the HVAC Unit

    Depending on the tractor model, access the HVAC evaporator core. This is typically located in the cab roof (requiring removal of the inner roof liner/headliner) or behind the rear cab panel.

  3. Locate the Sensor

    Find the evaporator temperature sensor. It features a probe that is physically inserted directly into the aluminum fins of the A/C evaporator core.

  4. Removal

    Disconnect the electrical connector (often a white plastic connector). Carefully pull the old sensor probe straight out of the evaporator fins. Do not bend the fins.

  5. Installation

    Gently insert the probe of the new sensor into the exact same location in the evaporator core. Ensure it is fully seated so it can accurately read the core temperature.

  6. Reassembly

    Reconnect the electrical plug. Reinstall any removed cab panels or headliners.

  7. Testing

    Reconnect the battery. Turn the tractor on, clear the stored fault codes via the dash or diagnostic tool, and run the A/C to confirm the compressor engages and the fault does not return.
