Massey Ferguson 10.03.08 – AIRCON: Air Conditioning Outside Temperature Sensor Short Circuit

The system has detected a short circuit in the ambient/outside air temperature sensor circuit. This usually means the sensor has failed internally (shorted to zero resistance) or the wiring harness connecting the sensor to the control module has rubbed through and is shorting to ground or another wire. Because these are NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) thermistors, a short circuit will typically cause the system to read an impossibly high outside temperature, which can disrupt the automatic climate control operation.

   Visual Inspection: Locate the outside temperature sensor (typically mounted in the front grille area, near the cab air intake, or under the cab roof overhang). Inspect the 2-pin oval connector and the wiring harness for chafing, melted insulation, or pinched wires that could cause a short to ground.

   Sensor Resistance Test: Disconnect the sensor. Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the two pins of the sensor. If the resistance reads at or near 0 ohms, the sensor is internally shorted and must be replaced.

   Wiring Harness Test: With the sensor disconnected, turn the key to the ON position and check the voltage at the harness connector. Also, check for continuity to ground on the signal wire. If the signal wire is shorted to ground while unplugged, the fault is in the wiring harness, not the sensor.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent any electrical spikes to the AIRCON module.

   Access the Sensor

   Locate the ambient temperature sensor. It is a small black plastic probe with a pressed-in mounting style.

   Disconnect

   Depress the locking tab on the 2-pin oval connector and pull the wiring harness free from the sensor.

   Remove the Sensor

   Unclip or press the faulty sensor out of its mounting bracket.

   Install the New Sensor

   Press the new sensor into the mounting hole until it clicks securely into place.

   Reconnect

   Plug the 2-pin oval connector back into the sensor. Ensure the weather seal is intact and the connector clicks.

   Clear Codes

   Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition on and use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the 10.03.08 fault code from the AIRCON module. Verify that the cab display now shows a realistic outside temperature.
