Massey Ferguson E100.16 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Engine Oil Pressure Too High

Issue description

The controller has detected an oil pressure input voltage from the sensor that is higher than the expected normal operating range (or higher than expected at 0 RPM). This can be caused by an actual high-pressure mechanical condition or an electrical fault (such as a short to a voltage source or an open ground circuit) causing the sensor to send a falsely high reading.

Check the cause

  1. Verify actual oil pressure using a manual mechanical gauge to determine if the issue is mechanical or a false sensor reading

  2. Inspect the oil pressure sensor wiring harness for an open ground circuit or a wire shorted to a voltage source

  3. Check engine oil viscosity and filter condition, as excessively thick oil or a blocked filter can cause high pressure spikes

  4. Evaluate the oil pump pressure relief valve to see if it is stuck closed or shimmed incorrectly

Repair steps

  1. Test the Sensor

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the engine oil pressure sensor. Install a mechanical gauge into the sensor port. Start the engine and observe the pressure.

  2. Address Electrical Faults

    If the mechanical gauge reads within the normal OEM specification, the issue is electrical. Test the wiring harness for continuity and shorts. If the wiring is intact, replace the faulty Engine Oil Pressure Sensor.

  3. Address Mechanical Faults

    If the mechanical gauge confirms high pressure, immediately shut down the engine to prevent blown seals or filter gasket blowouts.

  4. Perform an Oil Service

    Drain the engine oil and replace the oil filter. Ensure you are using the exact OEM-specified oil viscosity and a genuine OEM filter, as aftermarket filters with incorrect bypass valve ratings can cause pressure issues.

  5. Service the Pressure Relief Valve

    If the issue persists after an oil change, locate the engine oil pressure relief valve. Remove the valve assembly. Inspect the spring and the plunger/spool. If the valve is scored, jammed with debris, or stuck closed, clean the bore and replace the relief valve and spring assembly.
