Massey Ferguson 102.12 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Intake Boost Pressure Sensor Signal Erratic

Issue description

The engine's control system is receiving a chaotic, random, or dropping voltage signal from the intake manifold boost pressure sensor, which prevents the engine from accurately calculating the correct air-fuel mixture.

Check the cause

  1. Monitor live data using a diagnostic PC tool to check the DC output signal of the boost pressure sensor (should vary smoothly between 1.0V and 3.0V as throttle changes).

  2. Inspect the sensor's wiring harness and connector pins for corrosion, moisture, or physical damage. Verify there is no short circuit to ground or open circuit on the 5V reference, signal, or ground wires.

  3. If wiring is intact but the signal remains erratic, temporarily test the system with a known-good EEM4/EEM3 controller to rule out a defective Engine ECU.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

    Turn off the tractor ignition and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate sensor

    Locate the Intake Boost Pressure Sensor. It is mounted directly on the engine's intake manifold.

  3. Disconnect electrical connector

    Depress the locking tab and carefully disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor.

  4. Remove sensor

    Unbolt the retaining fastener(s) holding the sensor to the manifold and pull the sensor straight out.

  5. Clean mounting port

    Clean the mounting port on the intake manifold, ensuring no soot or debris falls into the intake.

  6. Install new sensor

    Install the new boost pressure sensor, ensuring the O-ring/seal seats properly to prevent boost leaks. Secure it with the retaining fastener.

  7. Reconnect electrical connector

    Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks into place.

  8. Reconnect battery

    Reconnect the battery.

  9. Clear fault code and verify

    Connect your diagnostic service tool, clear the 00102.12 fault code from the Engine ECU, and run the engine to verify that the live boost pressure signal is now stable.
