Issue description

The electronic control unit managing the engine is receiving a voltage supply that has dropped below the minimum required operating threshold (typically below 11.5V).

Check the cause

  1. Check the static battery voltage. A weak battery that drops voltage significantly during cranking will trigger this code.

  2. Test the alternator to ensure it is maintaining proper charging voltage while the engine is running.

  3. Inspect all ground straps and wires for corrosion, looseness, or pitting. Poor grounds create unstable voltage throughout the electrical system.

  4. Check the wiring harness between the fuse block, the battery, and the Engine ECU for chafing, moisture damage, or loose connector pins.

  5. Test the main engine ECU power relays and fuses for high resistance or partial failure.

Repair steps

  1. Charge or Replace the Battery

    If the battery fails a load test or rests below 11.5V, replace it. Clear the code and test operation.

  2. Replace the Alternator

    If the battery is good but the system voltage drops while running, replace the alternator.

  3. Clean Grounds

    Disconnect the main battery ground and ECU ground straps. Clean the contact points with a wire brush until bare metal is exposed, then reattach and tighten securely.

  4. Repair Wiring/Relays

    If you find chafed wires in the harness leading to the ECU, repair them using weatherproof connectors. Replace the main Engine ECU relay if it shows signs of pitting or fails to hold contact under load.

  5. Replace the Engine ECU

    If the battery, alternator, wiring, and relays all test perfectly (delivering a steady 12V+ to the ECU pins), but the ECU still logs an internal low voltage fault, the Engine ECU itself has failed and must be replaced and reprogrammed by a dealer.
