Massey Ferguson E105.03 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Inlet Manifold Temperature Signal Voltage High

Issue description

The signal measured by the intake manifold temperature sensor lies above the normal operating range. This typically indicates an open circuit, a disconnected sensor, or a short to a high-voltage source in the sensor or its wiring harness.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Check the wiring harness between the intake manifold temperature sensor and the ECU for physical damage, open circuits, or a short to a high-voltage source.

  2. Connector Check: Inspect the sensor and ECU connectors for corrosion, loose pins, or moisture.

  3. Voltage Test: Unplug the sensor. The reference voltage between the signal and ground pins at the harness connector should measure approximately 5V DC.

  4. Resistance Test: Measure the resistance of the temperature sensor itself. The nominal resistance should be approximately 2.5 kΩ at 20°C (68°F) and 0.186 kΩ at 100°C (212°F). If the sensor reads 'open' (infinite resistance) or is vastly out of range, the sensor is defective.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery terminals to prevent sparking or ECU damage.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Find the intake manifold air temperature sensor, which is installed in the engine's intake tract (typically downstream of the air filter and upstream of the turbocharger or directly on the intake manifold).

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the electrical connector from the sensor.

  4. Remove

    Unscrew the defective sensor from the intake manifold.

  5. Install

    Thread the new OEM sensor into the manifold and tighten it to the manufacturer's specified torque.

  6. Reconnect

    Plug the electrical harness back into the sensor, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

  7. System Reset

    Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition off for a minimum of 60 seconds, then turn it back on to perform a system reset. Use a diagnostic service tool to clear the inactive fault code from the ECU memory if it does not clear automatically.
