Massey Ferguson E105.04 – ECU (Engine Control Unit): Inlet Manifold Temperature Signal Voltage Low

Issue description

The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the Inlet Manifold Temperature Sensor (also known as the Manifold Air Temperature Sensor) that is below the normal operating range. This typically indicates a short to ground in the sensor circuit, a damaged wiring harness, or an internally failed sensor.

Check the cause

  1. Locate the Inlet Manifold Temperature Sensor on the intake manifold. Inspect the wiring harness and the electrical connector for physical damage, rubbing, or corrosion.

  2. Check for shorts to ground by disconnecting the sensor. If the diagnostic tool now reads a 'Voltage High' code (such as E105.03), the wiring harness is likely intact, and the sensor itself is internally shorted and needs replacement.

  3. Measure the resistance across the sensor's terminals to see if it is out of specification (open or shorted).

Repair steps

  1. Locate the sensor

    Find the manifold temperature sensor on the surface of the engine's intake manifold. It will be a screw-in type sensor with an electrical connector.

  2. Disconnect the harness

    Press the locking tab on the electrical connector and firmly pull it off the sensor. Move the harness safely out of the way.

  3. Remove the old sensor

    Use an open-ended wrench to loosen the sensor. Once loose, finish unscrewing it by hand.

  4. Prepare the new sensor

    If the new sensor does not have pre-applied thread sealant, wrap the threads with thread tape. Wrap in a counterclockwise direction (no more than 2 layers) so the tape doesn't bunch up when threading it in clockwise.

  5. Install the new sensor

    Hand-thread the new sensor into the intake manifold to ensure you do not cross-thread it (especially important as many manifolds are aluminum or plastic). Tighten it the rest of the way with a wrench.

  6. Reconnect and clear

    Plug the electrical connector back in until it clicks. Turn the key on and use a diagnostic tool to clear the E105.04 fault code, or start the tractor to verify the code goes inactive.
