Massey Ferguson 1076.14 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Open Circuit On Fuel Solenoid On High Pressure Pump

Issue description

The control module has detected a break in the electrical connection to the fuel solenoid on the high-pressure pump, either due to a severed wire, a disconnected or corroded plug, or an internal failure (burned-out coil) within the solenoid itself. This prevents the pump from building enough rail pressure, resulting in a no-start condition or severe power loss.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running from the Engine ECU to the high-pressure fuel pump for chafed wires, rodent damage, or melted insulation.

  2. Disconnect the plug at the fuel solenoid and check for pushed-back pins, corrosion, or moisture inside the connector.

  3. Using a multimeter, check the continuity of the actuator wires between the ECU harness connector and the solenoid connector to rule out a broken wire.

  4. Measure the resistance across the pins of the fuel solenoid itself. If the multimeter reads 'OL' (Open Loop) or infinite resistance, the internal coil has failed.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

    Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical shorts. Ensure the engine is cool, as the fuel system operates under extreme pressure (up to 23,500 PSI). Caution: Never crack open high-pressure lines while the engine is cranking or running.

  2. Clean the Area

    Thoroughly clean the exterior of the high-pressure fuel pump and the base of the solenoid with brake cleaner. It is critical that no dirt or debris enters the high-pressure pump during removal.

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the electrical connector from the fuel solenoid.

  4. Removal

    Remove the mounting screws (usually Torx or Allen head) securing the solenoid to the pump housing. Carefully twist and pull the solenoid straight out.

  5. Preparation

    Inspect the bore on the pump for any debris. Take the new fuel solenoid and lubricate its O-rings with clean diesel fuel to prevent tearing during installation.

  6. Installation

    Push the new solenoid firmly into the pump housing until it seats flush. Install and torque the mounting screws to the manufacturer's specifications.

  7. Reassembly

    Reconnect the electrical harness plug. Reconnect the battery.

  8. Prime and Clear

    Turn the key to the 'ON' position to allow the low-pressure lift pump to prime the system. Connect a diagnostic tool to clear the 001076.14 fault code from the ECU, then start the engine and check for leaks.
