Massey Ferguson 1077.31 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Fuel Solenoid On High Pressure Pump Issue (ECU) / Pump Initiated Engine Protection

The injection pump controller (PSG) has detected an abnormal condition, such as the fuel temperature input voltage being outside the range of what is physically possible, or a discrepancy in the fuel solenoid/control valve. To prevent catastrophic engine damage, the pump initiates an engine protection mode, typically causing the engine to derate by 20% per minute until it is running at a maximum of 50% full power.

   Shut the engine off and restart it to see if the diagnostic trouble code is an intermittent glitch or a hard fault

   Inspect the wiring harness and connectors at the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel solenoid (Fuel Control Actuator / FCA) for chafing, corrosion, or loose pins

   Check the fuel temperature sensor input voltage to ensure it is within the normal operating range

   Verify the operation of the fuel pressure solenoid (located in the fuel rail) before condemning the fuel quantity solenoid on the high-pressure pump

   Inspect the fuel system for water contamination or bad fuel, which can cause internal pump wear and trigger pump-initiated protection modes

   Depressurize and Disconnect

   Disconnect the tractor's battery. Clean the area around the high-pressure fuel pump thoroughly to prevent dirt from entering the open fuel system.

   Inspect/Replace the Solenoid

   Disconnect the electrical connector to the fuel solenoid (FCA) on the high-pressure pump. If diagnostics point to a faulty solenoid valve, remove its mounting screws and replace the solenoid.

   Pump Replacement

   If the pump controller or internal mechanicals have failed, the entire high-pressure injection pump must be replaced. Remove the high-pressure fuel lines and disconnect the pump gear/drive.

   Installation

   Install the new or remanufactured Bosch injection pump. Ensure proper seating and timing (if applicable to your specific engine tier).

   Reassembly

   Reconnect all fuel lines and electrical connectors.

   Bleed the System

   Prime and bleed the fuel system to remove all air.

   Clear Codes

   Reconnect the battery, start the engine, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the 001077.31 fault code.
