Massey Ferguson 110.04 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Coolant Temperature Signal Voltage Low

Issue description

The input voltage from the engine coolant temperature sensor drops below the normal operating range (typically below 0.1 volts). This usually indicates a short circuit to ground in the sensor wiring, a faulty sensor, or a disconnected harness.

Check the cause

  1. Check Coolant Levels: Ensure the coolant reservoir is filled to the proper level with extended-life coolant.

  2. Inspect the Wiring Harness: Check the wiring and the connector at the coolant temperature sensor for any visible damage, corrosion, or a short to ground (which would cause the low voltage reading).

  3. Test Sensor Resistance: Disconnect the sensor and measure the resistance across its terminals using a multimeter. Compare the readings to standard specifications (e.g., resistance should change smoothly as the engine warms up; a dead short indicates a failed sensor).

  4. Test Connector Voltage: With the key ON and the sensor disconnected, check the reference voltage at the harness connector to ensure the ECU is sending the proper signal (typically 5V).

Repair steps

  1. Drain Coolant

    Drain enough coolant from the radiator/block to lower the fluid level below the sensor's mounting location to prevent spills.

  2. Disconnect Wiring

    Carefully unplug the electrical connector from the old coolant temperature sensor.

  3. Remove the Sensor

    Use a deep socket or open-ended wrench to unscrew and remove the old sensor from the engine block or thermostat housing.

  4. Install the New Sensor

    Apply a suitable thread sealant to the threads of the new sensor (if it does not come pre-coated). Screw it into place and tighten it to the manufacturer's recommended torque specification.

  5. Reconnect Wiring

    Plug the wiring harness connector back into the new sensor.

  6. Refill and Bleed

    Refill the cooling system with the appropriate coolant mixture. Start the engine, check for leaks, and bleed any air pockets from the cooling system.

  7. Clear Codes

    Use a diagnostic tool to clear the 000110.04 fault code from the ECU.
