Massey Ferguson E110.04 – Engine ECU: Coolant Temperature Signal Voltage Low

Issue description

The input voltage from the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor has dropped below the sensor's minimum low-voltage specification. This typically indicates a short circuit to ground in the wiring harness, a failed sensor with an internal short, or a severely degraded connection.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the coolant temperature sensor for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinched lines that could cause a short to ground.

  2. Disconnect the sensor and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or damage.

  3. With the key ON and the sensor disconnected, use a multimeter to check the reference voltage from the ECU at the connector. It should typically read around 5V. If there is no voltage, the wiring between the ECU and the sensor is compromised.

  4. Measure the resistance across the sensor's terminals. If the resistance reads near zero (a dead short), the sensor itself has failed and must be replaced.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Ensure the engine is completely cool to prevent burn injuries and depressurize the cooling system.

  2. Drain Coolant

    Drain enough coolant from the radiator/block to lower the fluid level below the sensor's mounting location to prevent spills.

  3. Disconnect Wiring

    Carefully unplug the 2-pin wiring connector from the old coolant temperature sensor.

  4. Remove Sensor

    Use a wrench to unscrew and remove the old sensor from the engine block.

  5. Install New Sensor

    Apply a thread sealant to the threads of the new sensor (if it does not come pre-applied). Thread it into the block by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten to the manufacturer's recommended torque specification.

  6. Reconnect

    Plug the wiring harness connector back into the new sensor.

  7. Refill and Bleed

    Refill the cooling system with the appropriate extended-life coolant mixture. Start the engine, let it reach operating temperature, and bleed any air pockets from the system.

  8. Clear Codes

    Use a diagnostic tool to clear the E110.04 fault code from the Engine ECU and verify it does not return.
