Massey Ferguson 110.16 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Engine Coolant Temperature Signal Moderately High

Issue description

The engine control system has detected that the engine coolant temperature has exceeded safe operating limits. The engine protection function is activated, which will progressively derate engine power to prevent catastrophic engine damage.

Check the cause

  1. Check the engine coolant reservoir to ensure the fluid is at the proper level.

  2. Inspect the radiator core for clogs, dirt, chaff, or debris that could be restricting airflow.

  3. Verify that the cooling fan is operating correctly and that the fan belt is not slipping or broken.

  4. Check the electrical connection to the coolant temperature sensor for corrosion, loose pins, or damaged wiring.

Repair steps

  1. Halt Operation

    Stop machine operations immediately and let the engine idle briefly to cool down before shutting it off. Do not open the radiator cap while the engine is hot.

  2. Clean the Cooling System

    Use compressed air or a pressure washer (carefully, so as not to bend fins) to clean out the radiator and front grilles.

  3. Top Up Fluids

    Once the engine is cool, top up the coolant to the recommended level.

  4. Test the Sensor

    If the radiator is clean, the fan works, and the coolant level is fine but the code persists, the coolant temperature sensor may be faulty. Test the sensor's resistance with a multimeter to see if it matches OEM specifications.

  5. Replace Components

    If the sensor is reading out of range, replace it. If the sensor is good, the issue is likely mechanical (e.g., a stuck-closed thermostat or a failing water pump), which will require replacement to restore proper coolant flow.

  6. Clear Codes

    After repairs, cycle the key and use a diagnostic tool to clear the ECU fault codes.
