Massey Ferguson 110.16 – Engine ECU: Coolant Temperature High / Coolant Temperature ABOVE NORMAL

Issue description

The engine coolant temperature has exceeded the normal operating threshold. When this code is triggered, the system initiates an engine protection protocol. Depending on the severity, this results in a "Fuel limit by map" (FLm) restriction, which degrades engine power (typically a 50% to 75% reduction from max power) or forces an engine shutdown to prevent catastrophic damage like a cracked cylinder head or seized engine.

Check the cause

  1. SAFETY WARNING: Never open the radiator cap while the engine is hot. Wait 30 to 45 minutes for the engine to cool before performing checks.

  2. Check for blockages (Most Common Cause): Inspect the radiator fins for dirt, dust, and chaff sucked in during field work.

  3. Check coolant levels: Verify the fluid level in the radiator and the coolant reservoir tank.

  4. Inspect hoses and belts: Check for loose fan belts, leaking radiator hoses, or a lower hose that collapses at high RPMs.

  5. Verify sensor accuracy: Use an infrared thermometer on the top of the radiator tank and compare it to the dashboard gauge to rule out a faulty coolant temperature sensor.

  6. Check the water pump: Look for leaks or listen for unusual noises indicating a worn impeller.

Repair steps

  1. Cool Down

    Turn off the engine and allow the tractor to sit for at least 45 minutes until the engine block and radiator are cool to the touch.

  2. Clean the Radiator

    Use compressed air or a gentle stream of water to blow out all chaff and debris from the radiator fins.

  3. Service the Coolant

    If the coolant is low, top it up with Massey Ferguson Extended Life Coolant. If the system is heavily rusted or contaminated, perform a complete radiator flush.

  4. Replace the Thermostat (If faulty)

    Drain the coolant system. Unbolt the thermostat housing. Remove the old thermostat(s) and install the new one(s) with a new OEM gasket. Reattach the housing and refill the coolant. (Note: Some larger Sisu engines use dual thermostats in the same housing, e.g., a 79°C and an 83°C thermostat).

  5. Replace the Coolant Temperature Sensor (If faulty)

    Locate the sensor on the engine block/thermostat housing. Disconnect the electrical pigtail, unscrew the old sensor, thread in the new replacement, and reconnect the wiring.

  6. Test the System

    Start the tractor and let it idle up to operating temperature. Verify that the 00110.16 code clears and the temperature gauge remains stable below the red zone.
