Massey Ferguson 110 – Engine ECU: Engine Coolant Temperature Extremely High

Issue description

The system has detected that the engine coolant temperature has exceeded a critical safety threshold (typically >113°C or 115°C / 239°F-240°F). The system will actively derate engine power to protect the engine from catastrophic failure.

Check the cause

  1. SAFETY WARNING: Never open the radiator cap while the engine is hot. Stop the tractor, reduce the load immediately, and let it cool down for 30-45 minutes before proceeding.

  2. Check for blockages in the radiator and cooler stack (most common cause, often blocked with chaff, dust, or debris).

  3. Check coolant level in the reservoir and inspect for leaks around radiator hoses, clamps, or the water pump weep hole.

  4. Test the thermostat by feeling the upper radiator hose. If the gauge shows the engine is overheating but the upper radiator hose is cool to the touch, the thermostat is stuck closed.

  5. Inspect the fan belt tension, ensure the viscous fan clutch does not freewheel when the engine is hot, and listen for unusual noises from the water pump indicating a broken impeller or shaft.

Repair steps

  1. Clean the Cooler Stack

    If debris is found, use compressed air or a water hose to clean the entire cooler stack from the engine side outward (blowing the debris back out the way it came in).

  2. Top Up Fluids

    If the coolant is low but no major leaks are found, top up the system with Massey Ferguson Extended Life Coolant and bleed any air from the system.

  3. Replace the Thermostat (if faulty)

    Drain the coolant from the radiator petcock. Remove the upper radiator hose from the thermostat housing. Unbolt and remove the thermostat housing. Remove the old thermostat and scrape away any old gasket material. Install the new thermostat (ensure correct orientation) and a new gasket. Reinstall the housing, reattach the hose, refill the coolant, and run the engine with the cap off to bleed air pockets.

  4. Replace the Water Pump (if faulty)

    If the water pump weep hole is leaking or the impeller is broken, remove the fan and drive belt, unbolt the water pump, clean the block mating surface, and install a new pump and gasket.
