Massey Ferguson 1136.03 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): There Is A Problem With The Engine Module Internal Temperature Sensor Voltage (ECU)

Issue description

The internal temperature sensor voltage is above normal or open circuit. The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has a built-in temperature sensor to monitor its own operating temperature and protect its internal circuitry from overheating. When the ECU detects that the voltage from this internal sensor is too high, or if the circuit is open, it logs this code.

Check the cause

  1. Check ECU Cooling/Environment: Ensure that air circulates well around the ECU. Check for heavy dirt, mud, or debris buildup on the ECU housing that could cause it to overheat and trigger erratic internal sensor readings.

  2. Inspect Wiring and Connectors: Check the main wiring harnesses connecting to the ECU. Look for loose connections, corrosion, or damaged pins.

  3. Check Power and Ground: Verify that the ECU is receiving the correct operating voltage and has a solid ground connection. A poor ground or voltage spike can cause internal sensors to read out of range (high voltage/open circuit).

Repair steps

  1. Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Clean the area around the Engine Control Unit (ECU)

    This prevents dirt from entering the connectors.

  3. Carefully unplug the main wiring harness connectors from the ECU.

  4. Unbolt the ECU from its mounting bracket and remove it from the machine.

  5. Send the ECU to a specialized electronics repair facility for remanufacturing or replace it entirely with a new unit.

    This is required because the internal sensor has failed and cannot be serviced separately.

  6. Install the new or remanufactured ECU and secure it to the mounting bracket.

  7. Reconnect the wiring harnesses and the battery.

  8. Program/flash the new ECU with the correct software for your specific tractor model and engine tier.

    Use the dealer diagnostic tool (AGCO EDT).

  9. Clear the stored fault codes and run the machine to verify the repair.
