Massey Ferguson 1136 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): There Is A Problem With The Engine Module Internal Temperature Sensor (ECU)

Issue description

The internal temperature sensor, which is soldered directly onto the circuit board inside the engine controller, is detecting that the module is overheating and operating above its maximum safe temperature threshold.

Check the cause

  1. Check area around ECU for adequate air flow and ensure it is not caked in thick mud, chaff, or field debris

  2. Inspect the area near the ECU for external heat sources such as exhaust leaks, missing heat shields, or rerouted cooling lines

  3. Check ambient conditions to see if the tractor is being operated under extreme load in unusually high ambient temperatures without proper engine bay ventilation

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Engine ECU

Find the Engine ECU mounted on the side of the engine block or firewall (location varies slightly by series).

  2. Clean the Module

Carefully clean the exterior housing of the ECU and the surrounding engine bay to restore its ability to dissipate heat.

  3. Clear and Retest

Clear the 001136.00 fault code using a diagnostic tool and run the tractor under load to see if the code returns.

  4. Replace the ECU

If the code persists despite the module being clean and cool to the touch, the internal sensor has failed. You must replace the entire Engine ECU.

  5. Program the new ECU

A new ECU must be flashed/programmed by an authorized Massey Ferguson (AGCO) dealer to match the tractor's specific fuel mapping, immobilizer, and transmission configuration.
