Massey Ferguson 1188.02 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Turbo Waste Gate Actual Position Not The Same As Requested Position. (ECU)

Issue description

This code indicates a discrepancy between where the Engine Control Unit (ECU) is commanding the turbocharger wastegate actuator to be, and where the actuator's feedback sensor says it actually is. When the actuator fails to reach the requested position, the engine cannot properly regulate boost, resulting in either overboost (which can damage the engine) or underboost (causing severe turbo lag and lack of power).

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the electronic turbo actuator for broken wires, blown fuses, or corroded connectors. Verify power, ground, and signal integrity from the ECU.

  2. Disconnect the actuator arm from the wastegate linkage and manually move the wastegate lever on the turbocharger to ensure it is not physically seized or binding due to carbon buildup or extreme heat.

  3. Perform an actuator motor test (sweep test) via a diagnostic tool to check if the electronic actuator motor or its internal position sensor has failed.

  4. Use a diagnostic tool or manual gauge to verify actual boost pressure under load to confirm if the turbo is underboosting or overboosting.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Battery

    Always disconnect the battery before working on ECU-controlled engine components.

  2. Repair Wiring

    If diagnostics revealed a voltage drop or open circuit, repair the wiring harness and replace any damaged connector pins.

  3. Free or Replace the Wastegate

    If the physical wastegate flap inside the exhaust housing is seized and cannot be freed with penetrating fluid and manual manipulation, the entire turbocharger assembly must be replaced.

  4. Replace the Actuator

    If the actuator motor is dead, unbolt it from the turbocharger bracket and disconnect the linkage arm. Install the new actuator.

  5. Electronic Calibration

    Crucial Step. Electronic turbo actuators operate on a closed-loop system. After installing a new actuator (or a whole new turbo assembly), you must use a compatible dealer-level diagnostic tool to perform an actuator calibration. This allows the ECU to learn the new "fully open" and "fully closed" end stops.

  6. Clear Codes and Test

    Clear the 001188.02 code from the ECU and test drive the tractor under load to ensure boost pressure is regulated properly and the code does not return.
