1188.11

Massey Ferguson 1188.11 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Turbo Waste Gate Actuator Issue. (ECU)

Issue description

The turbo wastegate actuator is responsible for regulating the exhaust gas flow to the turbocharger's turbine, which controls the engine's maximum boost pressure. This code triggers when the controller detects an electrical fault, a mechanical binding, or a communication failure with the actuator motor.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness leading from the ECU to the turbo wastegate actuator for chafed wires, melted insulation from exhaust heat, or corroded connector pins.

  2. Disconnect the actuator arm from the wastegate valve linkage and manually move the wastegate lever on the turbocharger to ensure it moves freely and is not seized by carbon buildup or rust.

  3. Use a diagnostic scan tool to command the wastegate actuator to open and close. Listen for the motor operating and watch for smooth physical movement.

  4. Look for accompanying codes like 001188.02 (Position Mismatch) or 001188.07 (Actuator Motor Issue) to help narrow down whether the issue is a physical jam or a dead electrical motor.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical shorts and ensure the engine/exhaust system is completely cool.

  2. Access the Turbocharger

Locate the turbocharger assembly on the exhaust manifold side of the AGCO Power 3.3L engine.

  3. Disconnect Electronics

Unplug the electrical connector from the wastegate actuator.

  4. Remove the Actuator

Remove the retaining clip securing the actuator rod to the wastegate linkage. Unbolt the actuator bracket from the turbocharger housing. (Note: On some AGCO Power turbos, the actuator is calibrated to the turbocharger at the factory and they must be replaced as a single assembly. Verify with your specific turbo casting).

  5. Installation

Mount the new actuator (or complete turbocharger assembly) and reattach the linkage rod.

  6. Reassembly

Reconnect the electrical harness and the battery. If the turbocharger was replaced, ensure you use new gaskets (like the turbo return pipe gasket) and prime the turbo with oil before starting.

  7. Calibration & Clearing

Use an OEM-level diagnostic tool to clear the 001188.11 fault code from the ECU and, if required, perform a wastegate actuator calibration/relearn procedure.

Parts you might need

(2)
  • Turbo Wastegate Actuator / Turbocharger Assembly

OEM part numbers vary based on the exact tractor serial number and whether the actuator can be serviced separately from the turbocharger on your specific AGCO Power 3.3L engine.

  • Gasket, Turbo Return Pipe

    3638671M1

Required if removing/replacing the whole turbo assembly.
