Massey Ferguson 13.01.09 – TRANS1: Air Brake Solenoid Issue Dyna 6 (TRANS1)

Issue description

The transmission control system has detected an electrical malfunction (such as an open circuit, short circuit, or abnormal amperage draw) or an operational failure in the solenoid valve responsible for controlling the tractor's pneumatic air brake system.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness leading from the TRANS1 controller to the air brake solenoid for chafed wires, corrosion, or loose pins in the connector

  2. Use a multimeter to test the resistance of the air brake solenoid coil and verify that the TRANS1 module is sending the correct voltage signal to the solenoid when the brakes are applied

  3. Verify that the tractor's air compressor is building adequate pressure and that there are no severe air leaks in the lines leading to the brake valve assembly

  4. Ensure that the brake pedal switches and park brake switches are functioning correctly, as the TRANS1 module relies on these inputs to command the air brake solenoid

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and safely chock the wheels.

  2. Depressurize the System

    Completely drain the air from the tractor's pneumatic brake system to prevent injury when removing the valve.

  3. Locate the Solenoid

    Locate the air brake valve assembly. On many Dyna-6 models, the trailer/air brake control valves are situated on the right-hand hydraulic cover plate or transmission side block.

  4. Disconnect Electricals

    Unplug the electrical wiring harness connector from the faulty air brake solenoid.

  5. Remove the Solenoid

    Unbolt the retaining screws or fittings holding the solenoid to the valve block. Carefully remove the solenoid, ensuring no dirt or debris enters the pneumatic or hydraulic ports.

  6. Install the New Part

    Fit the replacement air brake solenoid valve and tighten the mounting hardware to the manufacturer's torque specifications.

  7. Reconnect and Pressurize

    Reconnect the electrical harness. Start the tractor and allow the air compressor to build system pressure. Listen and test for any air leaks around the new solenoid.

  8. Clear Codes

    Connect a diagnostic tool (such as the Massey Ferguson Wintest software) to clear the 13.01.09 fault code from the TRANS1 module, then test drive the tractor to confirm proper brake operation.
