Massey Ferguson 13.01.16 – TRANS1: Park Brake Release Solenoid High Amp Draw

Issue description

The transmission controller has detected an electrical current (amperage) flowing through the park brake release solenoid circuit that is higher than the normal operating limit. This condition is almost always caused by an internal short circuit within the solenoid coil itself, or a short-to-ground in the wiring harness supplying power to the solenoid.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Wiring Inspection: Trace the wiring harness from the TRANS1 module to the park brake release solenoid on the transmission valve block. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinched wires rubbing against the chassis that could cause a short to ground.

  2. Connector Check: Disconnect the electrical pigtail at the solenoid. Inspect the connector for water ingress, dirt, or corroded/bent pins that could bridge the connection and cause a short.

  3. Coil Resistance Test: Using a multimeter, measure the resistance (Ohms) across the pins of the park brake release solenoid. A reading of zero (or a reading significantly lower than the OEM specification) indicates an internal short in the coil, confirming the solenoid is dead and needs replacement.

  4. Harness Isolation Test: With the solenoid disconnected, turn the key ON and check if the "High Amp Draw" code (13.01.16) changes to an "Open Circuit" code (13.01.15). If it changes to open circuit, the wiring is intact and the solenoid is the culprit. If the high amp draw code persists with the solenoid unplugged, the short is in the wiring harness.

Repair steps

  1. Park and secure tractor

    Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and securely chock the wheels (since you will be disabling the park brake system during the repair).

  2. Locate valve block

    Locate the transmission valve block on the side of the Dyna VT transmission where the park brake release solenoid is housed.

  3. Clean area

    Thoroughly clean the area around the solenoid with brake cleaner or a rag to prevent any dirt or debris from entering the sensitive hydraulic system.

  4. Disconnect electrical connector

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the faulty park brake release solenoid.

  5. Remove retaining hardware

    Remove the retaining nut or bolts holding the solenoid coil/cartridge in place.

  6. Remove old solenoid

    Carefully slide the old solenoid off the valve stem (or remove the entire cartridge valve if replacing the whole assembly). Be prepared to catch a small amount of hydraulic oil.

  7. Lubricate O-rings

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean hydraulic oil.

  8. Install new solenoid

    Install the new solenoid and tighten the retaining nut/bolts to the manufacturer's specified torque.

  9. Reconnect electrical connector

    Reconnect the electrical connector, ensuring it clicks securely into place.

  10. Test operation

    Start the tractor, clear the fault codes using the tractor's diagnostic interface (or a diagnostic tool), and test the park brake operation to ensure it engages and releases properly without throwing the code.
