Massey Ferguson 13.01.41 – HITCH: Park Brake Released Solenoid High Amp Draw Dyna 6 (HITCH)

Issue description

The electronic control system has detected an electrical current (amperage) flowing through the park brake release solenoid that exceeds the maximum allowable threshold. This condition is almost always caused by an internal short circuit within the solenoid coil itself, a short-to-ground in the wiring harness leading to the solenoid, or a failing solenoid that is drawing excessive power to actuate.

Check the cause

  1. Safety First: Park the tractor on a flat surface and securely chock the wheels. Because you are diagnosing the parking brake system, the tractor could roll if the brake releases unexpectedly.

  2. Visual Wiring Inspection: Trace the wiring harness from the HITCH controller to the brake block solenoid on the transmission housing. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinched cables that could be shorting to the tractor's chassis (ground).

  3. Connector Check: Disconnect the plug at the park brake release solenoid. Inspect the pins for corrosion, dirt, or water ingress which can bridge the connections and cause a high amp draw.

  4. Multimeter Resistance Test: Set a digital multimeter to Ohms (Ω) and measure the resistance across the pins of the solenoid coil itself. A reading of zero or near-zero indicates the coil is internally shorted and must be replaced.

  5. Harness Voltage Test: With the solenoid disconnected, turn the key on and command the park brake to release. Measure the voltage at the harness connector to ensure the HITCH controller is sending the proper voltage signal and that the circuit isn't shorted upstream.

Repair steps

  1. Ensure the tractor is turned off, the key is removed, and the wheels are heavily chocked.

  2. Locate the brake block / park brake solenoid assembly on the transmission housing.

    Usually located on the hydraulic cover plate.

  3. Clean the area around the solenoid thoroughly with brake cleaner.

    Prevents any dirt from entering the hydraulic system during removal.

  4. Disconnect the electrical connector from the park brake release solenoid.

  5. Remove the retaining nut at the end of the solenoid valve stem.

  6. Slide the faulty solenoid coil off the valve cartridge.

    If the cartridge valve itself is leaking or sticking, you may need to unthread the entire valve body from the block using a wrench, but a "High Amp Draw" usually only requires replacing the electrical coil.

  7. Slide the new solenoid coil onto the stem and install the retaining nut.

    Tighten it to the OEM torque specification.

  8. Reconnect the electrical connector.

    Ensure it clicks securely into place.

  9. Use a diagnostic tool to clear the 13.01.41 fault code from the HITCH controller.

  10. Start the tractor and cycle the park brake on and off several times.

    Verify proper operation and ensure the code does not return.
