Massey Ferguson 13.01.47 – HITCH: Park Brake Switch Not Closing When Park Brake Disengaged Dyna 6 (HITCH)

Issue description

This fault indicates a mismatch between the physical position of the parking brake and the electrical signal being sent to the control unit. Specifically, when the operator disengages (releases) the parking brake, the safety switch is supposed to close its electrical circuit. The controller is detecting that the circuit remains open, meaning the system either thinks the brake is still applied or recognizes a sensor failure. This can cause safety interlocks to malfunction, warning lights to illuminate, and the transmission to restrict movement.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Inspect the handbrake mechanism in the cab. Check if dirt, debris, or a physical obstruction is preventing the handbrake lever from fully returning to the disengaged position.

  2. Wiring & Connector Check: Locate the park brake switch on the handbrake assembly. Unplug the connector and inspect for corrosion, moisture, or backed-out pins.

  3. Continuity Test: Using a multimeter, test the switch directly. It should show continuity (closed circuit) when the brake lever is released, and no continuity (open circuit) when the brake is pulled. If the switch tests fine, the issue is likely a broken wire or short in the harness between the switch and the HITCH module.

  4. Switch Adjustment: Verify that the switch is mounted securely. If the mounting bracket is bent or loose, the switch plunger may not be depressed far enough by the lever to close the internal contacts.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical shorts and ensure safety systems are powered down.

  2. Access the Switch

    Remove any interior cab trim panels necessary to fully access the base of the handbrake lever assembly.

  3. Remove the Old Switch

    Unplug the electrical wiring harness from the switch. Remove the mounting hardware (typically two small screws/bolts) securing the switch to the handbrake mechanism.

  4. Install the New Switch

    Mount the new switch in place. Ensure the plunger aligns correctly with the actuator tab on the handbrake lever.

  5. Reconnect and Reassemble

    Plug the electrical connector into the new switch. Reinstall any removed trim panels.

  6. Test

    Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition on and cycle the parking brake several times. Verify that the parking brake warning light on the dash turns on and off correctly, and that the tractor can be put into gear without throwing the 13.01.47 code.
