Issue description

The electronic control system is detecting an implausible state: the mechanical park brake has been engaged, but the electrical park brake switch has failed to open its circuit. This usually points to a stuck switch, a short circuit in the wiring, or a misadjusted switch mechanism.

Check the cause

  1. Mechanical Inspection: Check the physical handbrake lever and linkage. Ensure the mechanism is fully engaging and physically striking/releasing the switch plunger.

  2. Switch Continuity Test: Disconnect the park brake switch. Use a multimeter to test for continuity. The switch should show an open circuit when the brake is engaged and a closed circuit when disengaged. If it remains closed regardless of the plunger position, the switch has failed internally.

  3. Wiring Harness Check: Inspect the wiring from the park brake switch to the HITCH module. Look for chafed wires that may be shorting to the chassis ground, which would falsely signal to the module that the switch is still closed.

  4. Connector Inspection: Check the switch connector for water ingress, corrosion, or bent pins.

Repair steps

  1. Secure the Tractor

    Park the tractor on a flat surface, turn off the engine, and chock the wheels since you will be working on the parking brake system.

  2. Locate the Switch

    Access the park brake switch, which is typically mounted at the base of the handbrake lever assembly or along the park brake linkage.

  3. Disconnect Wiring

    Unplug the electrical connector from the switch.

  4. Remove the Switch

    Unbolt or unscrew the faulty switch from its mounting bracket.

  5. Install the New Switch

    Fit the replacement switch. Crucial step: Adjust the mounting nuts/bracket so that the switch plunger is properly depressed and released by the movement of the handbrake lever.

  6. Reconnect and Clear Codes

    Plug the electrical connector back in. Turn on the ignition and use the tractor's onboard diagnostic menu or a diagnostic tool to clear the 13.01.48 fault code.

  7. Test Operation

    Engage and disengage the park brake several times to ensure the dashboard indicator responds correctly and the fault code does not return.
