Massey Ferguson 13.02.15 – TRANS1: Park Brake Release Solenoid Open Circuit

Issue description

The transmission control module has detected an "open circuit" in the electrical circuit that controls the park brake release solenoid. This means there is a break in the electrical path—such as a disconnected plug, a severed wire, or a burned-out solenoid coil—preventing the controller from sending the electrical current needed to release the park brake. As a result, the tractor may be stuck in park or unable to move.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Locate the park brake release solenoid on the transmission valve block (typically located on top or on the side of the transmission housing, often requiring access from under the cab). Inspect the wiring harness leading to it for obvious signs of chafing, rodent damage, or breaks.

  2. Connector Check: Disconnect the plug at the solenoid. Check for loose, pushed-back, or heavily corroded pins.

  3. Solenoid Coil Resistance Test: Using a digital multimeter set to Ohms (Ω), measure the resistance across the two pins of the solenoid itself. If the reading is 'OL' (Open Loop) or infinitely high, the internal coil of the solenoid is broken. If the solenoid shows a normal resistance reading (typically between 5 to 20 ohms), the solenoid is good, and the fault lies in the wiring.

  4. Harness Continuity Test: If the solenoid is good, test the continuity of the wires from the solenoid connector back to the TRANS1 module to find the break in the harness.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Access the Solenoid

    Depending on the specific model, you may need to remove access panels or work from underneath the cab to reach the Dyna-VT transmission valve block.

  3. Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

    If the diagnostic tests revealed a broken wire, splice and solder the wire, then seal it with dual-wall heat shrink tubing. Reroute the harness slightly if chafing caused the break.

  4. Replace Solenoid (If Applicable)

    Clean the area around the solenoid to prevent dirt from entering the transmission hydraulic circuit. Unplug the electrical connector. Remove the retaining nut or bolts holding the solenoid coil/cartridge in place. Pull the old solenoid out. (Have a rag ready, as a small amount of hydraulic fluid may seep out). Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new solenoid and tighten the retaining hardware to the manufacturer's torque specification.

  5. Reassembly

    Reconnect the electrical plug, ensuring it clicks securely into place. Reconnect the battery.

  6. Clear Codes and Test

    Turn the ignition on. Use the tractor's dash display or a diagnostic tool to clear the 13.02.15 fault code. Start the tractor and cycle the park brake switch to verify that the brake engages and releases properly and the code does not return.
