Check the cause
Visually inspect the X339 pneumatic trailer braking solenoid valve on the tractor's rear transmission/brake valve block. Check the wiring harness and electrical connector for corrosion, moisture ingress, or physical damage.
Use a multimeter to check the resistance of the X339 solenoid coil and compare the reading against OEM specifications to ensure it is not internally failing under load.
Check for continuity between the X339 solenoid connector and the TRANS1 module pins to rule out a chafed wire or intermittent connection in the cab transmission harness.
Verify that the tractor's air brake system is building and maintaining proper pneumatic pressure, as mechanical blockages can cause the solenoid to behave erratically.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.
Depressurize
Safely bleed the pneumatic pressure from the tractor's air brake system before loosening any pneumatic fittings.
Disconnect
Unplug the electrical harness connector from the X339 pneumatic trailer brake solenoid valve.
Removal
Unbolt the retaining hardware securing the solenoid to the brake valve block. Carefully remove the solenoid, ensuring no dirt or debris enters the pneumatic lines or hydraulic ports.
Installation
Install the new X339 solenoid valve using new O-rings/seals if applicable. Torque the retaining bolts to OEM specifications.
Reconnect
Plug the electrical connector back into the solenoid.
Test and Clear
Start the tractor, allow the air system to build pressure, and check for air leaks. Use a diagnostic tool or the dashboard interface to clear the 13.X.09 fault code from the TRANS1 module. Perform a functional test of the trailer brakes.
