Massey Ferguson 13.X.16 – TRANS1: Park Brake Release Solenoid High Amp Draw Dyna VT (TRANS1)

Issue description

The transmission controller is detecting an abnormally high electrical current (amperage) on the circuit that powers the park brake release solenoid. This condition is typically caused by an internal short circuit within the solenoid coil itself (low resistance causing high current) or a short-to-ground in the wiring harness between the controller and the solenoid.

Check the cause

  1. Wiring Harness Inspection: Trace the wiring from the TRANS1 controller to the park brake release solenoid on the transmission. Look for chafed insulation, melted wires, or pinched harnesses that could be shorting directly to the tractor's chassis (ground).

  2. Connector Check: Disconnect the plug at the solenoid. Inspect the pins for corrosion, water ingress, or melting, which can bridge the connections.

  3. Coil Resistance Test: Using a multimeter, measure the resistance (Ohms) across the pins of the park brake release solenoid. A reading of zero or near-zero indicates the coil is internally shorted and must be replaced.

  4. Circuit Isolation: With the solenoid disconnected, turn the key on and check if the code changes from 'High Amp Draw' (13.X.16) to 'Open Circuit' (13.X.15). If it does, the wiring is likely fine, and the solenoid is the culprit.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

    Park the tractor on a flat, level surface. Because you are working on the park brake system, securely chock the wheels to prevent the machine from rolling when the brake is manipulated or disabled.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

    Locate the park brake release solenoid on the transmission hydraulic valve block.

  3. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the battery isolator switch.

  4. Remove the Solenoid

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the solenoid. Remove the retaining nut or bolt at the end of the solenoid stem.

  5. Replace the Coil/Valve

    Slide the old solenoid coil off the valve cartridge. (If using a complete solenoid kit, you may need to unthread the entire valve cartridge from the block. Be prepared to catch a small amount of hydraulic fluid).

  6. Install the New Part

    Slide the new solenoid coil onto the stem and secure the retaining nut. Reconnect the electrical plug.

  7. Clear Codes and Test

    Turn the battery power back on. Use the tractor's diagnostic interface to clear the 13.X.16 fault code from the TRANS1 module. Start the tractor and cycle the park brake to ensure it engages and releases properly without throwing a code.
