Massey Ferguson 13.X.41 – HITCH: Park Brake Released Solenoid High Amp Draw Dyna 6 (HITCH)

Issue description

The electrical circuit controlling the solenoid responsible for releasing the parking brake is drawing more electrical current (amperage) than the system allows. This typically points to a short circuit to ground in the wiring harness, or an internal short within the solenoid coil itself.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Wiring Inspection: Trace the wiring harness from the park brake solenoid (located on the side of the transmission valve block) back to the HITCH controller. Look for pinched wires, melted insulation, or chafing against the tractor chassis that could cause a short to ground.

  2. Connector Check: Disconnect the electrical connector at the solenoid. Inspect the pins for water ingress, dirt, or corrosion, which can bridge the connections and cause a short.

  3. Coil Resistance Test: Using a multimeter, measure the resistance (Ohms) across the terminals of the disconnected solenoid. A reading of near-zero ohms indicates the internal coil has shorted out and the solenoid must be replaced.

  4. Harness Continuity Test: With the solenoid disconnected, turn the key ON and test the supply wire for proper voltage, and test the ground circuit. Ensure there is no continuity between the power supply wire and the tractor chassis (ground) when unplugged.

Repair steps

  1. Secure the Tractor

    Park the tractor on a flat, level surface. Because you are working on the parking brake system, you must securely chock the wheels to prevent the tractor from rolling. Turn off the engine and disconnect the battery.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

    Locate the transmission range/brake valve block assembly on the side of the Dyna-6 transmission.

  3. Clean the Area

    Thoroughly clean the valve block and the area around the park brake solenoid with brake cleaner. It is critical that no dirt or debris enters the hydraulic system during removal.

  4. Remove the Solenoid

    Disconnect the electrical connector. Unbolt the retaining screws holding the faulty park brake release solenoid to the valve block. Have a rag ready to catch a small amount of residual hydraulic fluid.

  5. Install the New Part

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean hydraulic fluid. Insert the new solenoid into the valve block and tighten the retaining bolts to the manufacturer's torque specifications.

  6. Reassemble and Test

    Reconnect the electrical connector and the battery. Start the tractor and use the dashboard or a diagnostic tool to clear the inactive 13.00.41 fault code.

  7. Verify Operation

    Engage and disengage the park brake multiple times to ensure the code does not return and the brake releases properly.
