Massey Ferguson 13.X.49 – HITCH: Park Brake Wear Switch Not Opening
Issue description
The system expects the park brake wear switch circuit to open under specific conditions (such as when the brake is engaged or when a certain wear threshold is met). If the switch remains closed (shorted to ground or internally stuck), the controller logs this fault to warn the operator of a potential brake wear issue or a faulty sensor circuit.

Check the cause
Locate the park brake wear switch on the rear axle/transmission housing. Inspect the switch and its wiring for physical damage, mud/debris buildup, or corrosion.
Disconnect the switch and use a multimeter to check the wiring harness back to the HITCH module for a short to ground (a chafed wire shorting to the chassis will mimic a stuck-closed switch).
Test the switch itself with a multimeter. Manually actuate the park brake (or simulate the wear condition) to see if the switch transitions from closed to open. If it reads continuous (closed) regardless of the brake state, the switch has failed internally.
Verify that the park brake mechanism itself is not seized and that the brake pads/discs are not worn beyond the mechanical limit, which could be causing the switch to read abnormally.
Repair steps
Safety First
Park the tractor on a flat, level surface. Chock the wheels securely, as you will be working on the parking brake system. Turn off the engine and remove the key.
Locate the Switch
Identify the park brake wear switch on the transmission/brake housing (refer to your specific model's service manual for the exact location on the rear axle).
Disconnect
Unplug the electrical connector from the switch. Clean the area around the switch to prevent dirt from entering the housing.
Remove
Unscrew/unbolt the faulty wear switch from its mounting point.
Install
Thread in the new OEM park brake wear switch. Tighten to the manufacturer's specified torque (do not overtighten, as these sensors can be fragile).
Reconnect
Plug the electrical harness back into the switch. Ensure the weather seal on the connector is intact.
Clear Codes
Turn the ignition on and use the tractor's onboard diagnostic menu (or a dealer diagnostic tool) to clear the 13.X.49 fault code from the HITCH module.
Test
Engage and disengage the park brake several times. Drive the tractor a short distance to confirm the code does not return.
