Issue description

This code indicates that the fuel pressure entering the high-pressure fuel pump is reading higher than the normal operating threshold. The FMI 16 designation specifically means "Data Valid But Above Normal Operational Range - Moderately Severe Level". This can be caused by an actual high-pressure condition in the low-pressure supply circuit (such as a restricted return line) or a skewed/faulty fuel pressure sensor sending an artificially high voltage signal to the controller.

Check the cause

  1. Connect a mechanical fuel pressure gauge to the low-pressure fuel supply circuit (at the inlet of the high-pressure pump) to verify if the pressure is actually too high.

  2. If mechanical pressure is genuinely high (actual high-pressure cause): Inspect the fuel return lines back to the tank for kinks, blockages, or crushed sections.

  3. If mechanical pressure is normal (sensor fault cause): Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the fuel supply pump inlet pressure sensor for chafed wires, corrosion, or a short-to-voltage.

  4. If wiring is intact but the ECU still reads high pressure (sensor fault cause): Test the fuel pressure sensor itself for skewed readings.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent accidental engine cranking or electrical shorts.

  2. Relieve Fuel Pressure

    Carefully crack the low-pressure fuel line fitting to bleed off any residual fuel pressure. Catch any spilled fuel with a shop rag.

  3. Disconnect the Sensor

    Locate the fuel supply pump inlet pressure sensor (typically mounted on the fuel filter housing or directly on the inlet side of the high-pressure fuel pump). Unplug the electrical connector.

  4. Remove the Sensor

    Using an appropriately sized wrench or deep socket, unthread the faulty sensor from the housing.

  5. Install the New Sensor

    Thread the new OEM sensor into the port by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten to the manufacturer's specified torque.

  6. Reconnect and Prime

    Reconnect the electrical harness. Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition key to the "ON" position (without starting the engine) to allow the electric lift pump to prime the fuel system and purge air.

  7. Clear Codes and Test

    Use a diagnostic service tool (like AGCO EDT) to clear the 001381.16 / SPN 1381 FMI 16 fault code. Start the engine and verify that the code does not return and that there are no fuel leaks.
