Issue description

This code indicates that the high-pressure brake system is losing pressure faster than normal, forcing the hydraulic pump to cycle on and off (charge) too frequently to maintain the required braking pressure. The most common underlying cause is a failed brake accumulator (loss of its internal nitrogen gas charge or a ruptured diaphragm), which eliminates the system's ability to store pressurized fluid. It can also be caused by an internal/external hydraulic leak or a faulty brake pressure sensor giving erratic readings.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Leak Inspection: Inspect the entire brake hydraulic circuit (lines, fittings, and brake valve) for external fluid leaks.

  2. Accumulator Test: Test the brake accumulator. If the accumulator is "flat" (has lost its nitrogen pre-charge), it will not store pressure, causing the system to short-cycle.

  3. Sensor Verification: Use a diagnostic tool to monitor the live data from the brake pressure sensor. Verify if the pressure is actually dropping rapidly or if the sensor is faulty and sending false low-voltage signals to the TRANS1 module.

  4. Internal Leakage Check: Check the brake control valves and brake piston seals for internal bypassing.

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize the System

    Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and apply the parking brake. Crucial safety step: Pump the foot brake pedals multiple times until they feel completely firm. This exhausts all residual high-pressure hydraulic fluid from the accumulator.

  2. Locate and Remove

    Locate the high-pressure brake accumulator. Disconnect the hydraulic lines attached to it, using a drip pan to catch residual fluid. Unbolt the accumulator from its mounting bracket.

  3. Verify Nitrogen Charge

    Verify that your replacement accumulator has the correct nitrogen pre-charge. (Note: Accumulators shipped via air freight are legally required to be fully discharged prior to shipping. If yours was air-shipped, it MUST be recharged with nitrogen by a qualified technician before installation).

  4. Install the New Part

    Mount the new accumulator into the bracket and securely reconnect the hydraulic lines.

  5. Bleed the Brakes

    You must bleed the brake system to remove introduced air. According to Massey Ferguson procedures, this typically involves bleeding the right-hand brake, the front universal joint brake, and the pneumatic/hydraulic trailer brakes (if fitted).

  6. Clear Codes

    Start the tractor, check for leaks, and verify that the pump charging cycle has returned to normal intervals. Clear the 14.01.06 fault code from the TRANS1 ECU using a diagnostic tool.
