Issue description

An anomaly in the high-pressure brake system (either hydraulic or pneumatic trailer brakes, depending on the tractor's configuration). Check the cause

  1. Verify the sub-code to narrow down the issue (e.g., 14.X.05 means pressure is too high, 14.X.07 indicates an open circuit, and 14.X.08 indicates pressure is too low).

  2. Locate the high-pressure brake sensor (often designated as X21 for the ParkLock brake pressure sensor or the trailer air brake pressure sensor) and inspect the wiring harness for chafing, corrosion, or loose connector pins.

  3. Using a multimeter, back-probe the sensor connector to check sensor voltage. Normal operating voltage should be between 1V and 5V. A reading outside this range confirms a sensor failure or a short/open circuit.

  4. Connect a mechanical pressure gauge to the brake system test port to verify actual pressure and determine if the system is losing pressure or if the sensor is reporting a false value.

  5. Inspect the bleed and filling solenoid valves for the brake system to ensure they are not short-circuited to 0V or stuck open.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the tractor on a flat, level surface. Turn off the engine, remove the key, and chock the wheels. Depress the brake pedals a few times to relieve any residual hydraulic or pneumatic pressure in the system.

  2. Access the Sensor

    Locate the faulty brake pressure sensor on the transmission valve block or the air brake assembly (refer to your specific model's service manual for the exact location of sensor X21 or the trailer brake sensor).

  3. Harness Repair (If Applicable)

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a wiring issue (such as an open circuit), repair the damaged wires or replace the connector pigtail.

  4. Sensor Replacement

    If the sensor voltage was out of range, disconnect the electrical harness from the sensor. Use a wrench to carefully unthread the old sensor from the port. Have a rag ready to catch any minor fluid drips.

  5. Installation

    Thread the new OEM pressure sensor into the port and tighten it to the manufacturer's specified torque. Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring it clicks securely into place.

  6. Bleed the System

    If replacing a hydraulic sensor introduced air into the lines, perform a brake bleed procedure as outlined in the Massey Ferguson workshop manual.

  7. Clear Codes

    Use the Massey Ferguson Electronic Diagnostic Tool (EDT) or the dashboard diagnostic menu to clear the 14.X.04 fault code. Start the tractor and test the brakes to ensure the code does not return.
