Massey Ferguson E157.03 – Engine ECU: Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor High Voltage

Issue description

Rail pressure sensor voltage above normal or open circuit. This indicates that the signal voltage returning from the fuel rail pressure sensor to the controller is higher than the maximum expected threshold, which almost always points to an electrical open circuit, a disconnected sensor, a severed wire, or an internally shorted/failed sensor.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the 3-pin electrical connector at the fuel rail pressure sensor for backed-out pins, corrosion, or water intrusion.

  2. Trace the wiring harness from the sensor back to the Engine ECU, looking for chafed, melted, or severed wires that would cause an open circuit.

  3. Perform a voltage test with the key ON and engine OFF. Disconnect the sensor and probe the harness connector for a 5V reference signal, a sensor ground, and a signal return line (a broken ground wire will output a high voltage fault).

  4. Check fuel system integrity for massive leaks in the common rail system and ensure fuel filters are clean, as secondary pressure anomalies can trigger related codes.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Clean the area around the fuel rail thoroughly. Common rail systems are highly sensitive to microscopic contamination; dirt entering the rail can destroy fuel injectors.

  2. Depressurize

    Ensure the engine has been off for an adequate amount of time to allow the high-pressure fuel rail to depressurize.

  3. Disconnect

    Disconnect the negative battery terminal. Unplug the 3-pin electrical connector from the sensor.

  4. Removal

    Using the appropriate wrench, carefully unscrew the faulty pressure sensor from the fuel rail. Have clean rags ready to catch residual fuel.

  5. Installation

    Thread the new OEM sensor into the rail (common thread sizes are M14 x 1.5 or M18 x 1.5 depending on the engine). Torque strictly to the manufacturer's specifications to prevent leaks or thread damage.

  6. Reassembly

    Reconnect the 3-pin harness and the battery.

  7. Priming

    Cycle the ignition key to the ON position several times without cranking the engine. This allows the lift pump to prime the system and build low-pressure fuel before starting.

  8. Clear Codes

    Connect the Massey Ferguson EDT (Electronic Diagnostic Tool) to clear the E157.03 code from the ECU, or clear it via the dashboard interface if your specific model supports it.
