Massey Ferguson 157.14 – Engine ECU (EEM3 or EEM4): Fuel Rail Pressure Below Requested Pressure

Issue description

The engine's monitoring system has detected a leakage on the high-pressure side of the fuel injection system by quantity balance. The actual fuel rail pressure is lower than the pressure commanded by the controller, causing the engine to enter a heavy power derate (Degradation Level 3).

Check the cause

  1. Verify the fuel tank is above 25% capacity to rule out fuel sloshing and aeration introducing air into the system

  2. Inspect the fuel for contamination (water, DEF, gasoline, or coolant) which can damage high-pressure components

  3. Inspect the engine and chassis for any external fuel leaks

  4. Check the rail pressure sensor wiring, connectors, and contact surfaces for oxidation, and verify a steady 5V power supply from the ECU

  5. Look for wiring/connector faults at the high-pressure pump and run a high-pressure pump operation test using a diagnostic service tool

  6. Run an injector return flow test to isolate a stuck-open or leaking injector returning too much fuel to the tank

Repair steps

  1. Clear the Code

    Save the error log, erase it, and restart the ECU. If the fault does not return during the next driving cycle, it may have been a transient issue (like air in the lines).

  2. Test with a Known Good Sensor

    If the code returns and wiring checks out, temporarily swap the rail pressure sensor with a known good unit to rule out a defective sensor.

  3. Replace the Pressure Relief Valve (PRV)

    If the sensor is good, replace the Pressure Relief Valve (also known as the pressure limiting valve). It is a highly common failure point that will bleed off rail pressure if stuck open or leaking internally.

  4. Address the High-Pressure Pump / Injectors

    If the PRV and sensor are functioning, the high-pressure pump must be inspected by an authorized Bosch service dealer, or the faulty injectors identified in the return flow test must be replaced.

  5. ECU Verification

    If all mechanical systems are functional and the fault remains active, test the system with a replacement EEM4 controller to rule out a defective original ECU.
