Massey Ferguson E157.15 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Fuel Rail Pressure Below Requested Pressure

Issue description

The actual fuel pressure inside the high-pressure common rail has dropped below the tolerance threshold requested by the engine management system.

Check the cause

  1. Check fuel level and quality to ensure adequate fuel that is not gelled or contaminated with water.

  2. Inspect primary and secondary fuel filters for clogs, which are a primary cause of fuel starvation.

  3. Check the fuel lift pump/supply pump to ensure it is delivering adequate low-pressure fuel to the high-pressure injection pump.

  4. Inspect all fuel lines, injector lines, and the common rail for visible fuel leaks.

  5. Inspect the 3-pin electrical connector and wiring harness leading to the fuel rail pressure sensor for corrosion, damage, or loose connections.

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize system

    Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and allow the engine to cool completely. Warning: The common rail system operates at extreme pressures (up to 2000 bar). You must allow the system to fully depressurize before opening any lines.

  2. Clean area

    Thoroughly clean the area around the common rail and the pressure sensor to prevent dirt or debris from entering the open fuel system.

  3. Disconnect connector

    Disconnect the 3-pin electrical connector from the fuel rail pressure sensor.

  4. Remove sensor

    Using the appropriate wrench, carefully unscrew the faulty sensor from the common rail.

  5. Install new sensor

    Install the new OEM fuel rail pressure sensor. (Note: Thread sizes are typically M14 x 1.5 or M18 x 1.5 depending on the specific engine/sensor part number). Torque to the manufacturer's specifications.

  6. Reconnect connector

    Reconnect the 3-pin electrical connector.

  7. Prime fuel system

    Prime/bleed the low-pressure fuel system if required by your specific model's manual.

  8. Inspect for leaks

    Start the engine and inspect the rail area closely for any fuel leaks.

  9. Clear codes and test

    Use a diagnostic tool to clear the E157.15 fault code from the ECU and test drive the machine under load to ensure the code does not return.
