Massey Ferguson E168.04 – Engine Electronic Module (EEM): Battery Voltage Below Normal / Battery Voltage Low

Issue description

The voltage level of the unswitched power supply to the controller is below the normal operating threshold. Depending on the exact system state, the controller triggers this fault when the supply voltage drops below 7.8V or 6.5V on a 12V system.

Check the cause

  1. Check battery state of charge and perform a load test (resting voltage should be ~12.6V)

  2. Measure alternator output voltage across battery terminals with the engine running (should be 13.5V - 14.5V)

  3. Inspect the wiring path from the battery to the EEM for bad contacts, corrosion, or chafed wires causing a voltage drop

  4. Inspect and clean the main chassis ground and the ECU ground pins

Repair steps

  1. Clean Connections

    Disconnect the negative battery terminal, followed by the positive. Clean the battery posts and terminals with a wire brush. Reconnect and tighten them securely.

  2. Test/Replace the Battery

    If the battery fails a load test or will not hold a charge above 12.4V, remove the battery hold-down bracket, extract the old battery, and install a new OEM-spec battery.

  3. Test/Replace the Alternator

    If the battery is good but the running voltage is low, disconnect the battery, remove the serpentine/drive belt from the alternator pulley, disconnect the electrical connectors on the rear of the alternator, and unbolt it from the engine bracket. Install the new alternator, re-tension the belt, and reconnect the wiring.

  4. Repair ECU Harness

    If both the battery and alternator test fine, use a multimeter to measure the voltage directly at the EEM supply pins. If the voltage at the ECU is significantly lower than at the battery, locate and repair the corroded wire or replace the damaged section of the wiring harness.

  5. Clear Codes

    Turn the key to the ON position and use a diagnostic service tool to clear the E168.04 / SPN 168 FMI 4 fault code from the EEM.
