Massey Ferguson 174.04 – Engine ECU (AGCO SISU POWER EEM4): Fuel Temperature Sensor Low Voltage
Issue description
The control module is receiving a signal voltage from the fuel temperature sensor that has dropped below the acceptable minimum threshold (typically below 0.1 volts). This condition almost always points to a short circuit to ground in the sensor's wiring harness, a completely failed sensor, or a severely damaged electrical connector.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the fuel temperature sensor (threaded into the fuel filter housing or near the high-pressure fuel pump) and its 2-pin electrical connector for physical damage, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.
Trace the wiring harness from the sensor back to the Engine ECU. Look for chafed insulation, pinched wires, or melted areas that could be causing the signal wire to short directly to the chassis ground.
Perform a voltage test: Disconnect the sensor, turn the ignition ON (engine off), and use a multimeter to check the harness connector for the ECU's 5V reference signal. If missing, the short is in the harness or the ECU itself.
Perform a sensor resistance test: Measure the resistance across the two pins of the sensor. If the multimeter reads 0 ohms (a dead short) or is completely out of the OEM specification range, the sensor has failed internally.

Preparation
Turn off the engine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.
Locate and Prep
Locate the fuel temperature sensor on the fuel system. Place a shop rag or catch pan underneath it to catch any residual fuel that will leak out during removal.
Disconnect
Depress the locking tab on the sensor's electrical connector and pull it free.
Remove
Use a deep socket or wrench to unthread the faulty brass sensor from its housing.
Install
Thread the new sensor into the housing by hand to prevent cross-threading. Tighten it securely to the OEM torque specification (do not overtighten, as the brass body can snap).
Reconnect
Plug the electrical connector back into the new sensor until it clicks securely.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery. Turn the key to the ON position and use a compatible diagnostic scan tool (such as WinEEM4 or a J1939 scanner) to clear the 000174.04 fault code. Start the engine and verify there are no fuel leaks and that the code does not return.
