1761.01

Massey Ferguson 1761.01 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EEM4: DEF Tank Level Low or DEF Tank EMPTY

Issue description

The aftertreatment Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF / AdBlue) tank level has fallen below the critical warning threshold. When this fault is active, the engine will typically enter a power derate after a certain time limit.

Check the cause

  1. Physically inspect the DEF tank to verify if the fluid is actually empty or critically low.

  2. Inspect the DEF tank, filler neck, cap, and heated supply/return lines for leaks, cracks, or crystallization (white powdery residue) that would indicate fluid loss.

  3. Check the sensor wiring harness for chafing, open circuits, or shorts to ground. A stuck float or sensor can trigger this code even if the tank is full.

  4. Ensure the tank was not accidentally filled with diesel fuel or contaminated water, which can damage the sensor and pump module.

Repair steps

  1. Refill the Tank

Refill the DEF tank with a valid, high-quality reducing agent (DEF / AdBlue). Ensure the filler neck is completely clean to prevent dirt ingress.

  2. Connect Diagnostic Tool

Connect your Massey Ferguson / AGCO diagnostic service tool (e.g., WinEEM4 or EDT) to the tractor's diagnostic port.

  3. Save and Clear

Save the current error log, and then command the tool to erase the error log.

  4. Restart ECU

Turn the ignition off for a minimum of 60 seconds to perform a System Reset, then restart the ECU/tractor.

  5. Verify

Run the engine to verify the warning lamp extinguishes and the tractor exits the derate condition. If the fault immediately returns despite a full tank, the DEF Tank Level Sensor/Header unit must be replaced.
