Massey Ferguson 190.16 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Engine Over Speed Registered
Issue description
The engine control unit has detected the engine speed exceeding the acceptable operating limit (typically in excess of 3,000 RPM). When this code is active, the engine protection function is triggered, and the ECU will cut off the fuel feed until the engine speed drops back down to a safe threshold (usually below 2,600 RPM).

Check the cause
Check for operator error — this code is most frequently caused by engine braking while traveling downhill with too low of a gear ratio engaged
Scan for additional codes using the WIN Métadiag© or WinEEM4 Service Tool, checking specifically for sensor voltage faults
Clear code SPN 190 FMI 16 from the ECU memory, restart the tractor, and monitor to see if the code reappears during normal operation
Inspect the Engine Speed Sensor (Crankshaft Position Sensor) and its wiring harness for corrosion, damage, or loose contact pins if the code triggers immediately upon startup or during normal RPM ranges

Address Operational Habits
If the fault was triggered by downhill engine braking, no mechanical repair is necessary. Educate the operator on selecting the correct gear ratio to prevent mechanical over-revving, which can cause severe internal engine damage.
Clear the Fault
Use the diagnostic service tool to clear the fault code and reset the ECU.
Disconnect battery
If diagnostic testing proves the Engine Speed Sensor is sending erratic or false high-RPM signals to the ECU, begin sensor replacement by disconnecting the battery.
Locate and disconnect sensor
Locate the Engine Speed Sensor / Crankshaft Position Sensor on the engine block and disconnect the 3-pin or 2-pin wiring harness.
Remove old sensor
Remove the retaining bolt and extract the old sensor.
Install new sensor
Install the new OEM sensor and torque to factory specifications.
Reconnect and clear codes
Reconnect the harness, restore battery power, and clear the ECU codes.
