Massey Ferguson 1B.01.08 – Linkage/PTO/Light Module On The B-Pillar: Issue With Signal From Hitch Maximum Height Dial

Issue description

This code indicates a circuit or sensor failure where the electronic control system is receiving an erratic, out-of-range, or missing electrical signal from the potentiometer dial used by the operator to set the maximum lifting height of the rear 3-point hitch.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the physical condition of the Hitch Maximum Height Dial on the B-Pillar or armrest console to ensure it turns smoothly and is not broken.

  2. Access the back of the dial and inspect the wiring harness and connector for corrosion, loose pins, or chafed wires.

  3. Using a multimeter, verify the potentiometer receives the correct reference voltage and check the signal wire for smooth, linear voltage changes as the dial is turned.

  4. Verify there are no accompanying LIN BUS or CAN BUS communication error codes (e.g., 1B.01.04 or 1B.01.06) indicating a broader module failure.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the tractor ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts during the repair.

  2. Access the Module

Carefully pry up or unscrew the trim panels on the B-Pillar or the armrest control console to access the underside of the hitch control dials.

  3. Disconnect the Dial

Locate the specific potentiometer for the Maximum Height Dial. Unplug its electrical wiring harness connector.

  4. Remove the Potentiometer

Remove the retaining nut, locking clip, or screws securing the faulty potentiometer to the console panel and pull the switch out.

  5. Install the New Part

Insert the replacement potentiometer into the panel, ensuring the dial alignment notch matches the console. Secure it with the retaining hardware.

  6. Reassembly

Reconnect the electrical harness to the new dial. Reinstall the console trim panels.

  7. Clear Codes and Calibrate

Reconnect the battery. Turn on the ignition, clear the stored 1B.01.08 fault code using the diagnostic menu or a scan tool, and test the hitch maximum height function to ensure the signal is restored and the ELC responds accurately.
