Massey Ferguson E2659.01 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): EGR valve 1 EGR below the normal level

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected that the feedback from the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor or Delta Pressure Sensor indicates the air flow through the engine is not meeting the expected setpoint for the commanded Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve position. It points to a restriction in the EGR system, a faulty sensor, or a malfunctioning EGR valve.

Check the cause

  1. Check for associated fault codes related to the MAF sensor, turbocharger, or VGT actuator using an electronic service tool, and resolve these first.

  2. Inspect the Delta Pressure Sensor circuit: check connector seating, verify 5-volt power and ground, check signal wire (approx. 2.5 volts), and perform a wiggle test on the harness.

  3. Inspect the EGR valve for heavy soot/carbon buildup or mechanical sticking by removing the cover.

  4. Inspect the EGR cooler (inlet side and crossover tube) for severe carbon blockages, paying special attention to the cold side.

Repair steps

  1. Clean Ports and Tubes

    Clean the EGR differential pressure ports and tubes. Keeping these clear often resolves erratic sensor readings and restores proper flow.

  2. Replace Faulty Sensors

    If the Delta Pressure Sensor or Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) sensor fails the voltage/load test, replace it.

  3. Clean or Replace the EGR Valve

    Remove the EGR valve. If it is heavily carboned but mechanically sound, clean it thoroughly. If the internal mechanism has failed or the motor is burnt out, replace the valve.

  4. Service the EGR Cooler

    Clean out any carbon buildup at the inlet of the EGR cooler. If the cooler is completely plugged and cannot be cleared, the EGR cooler must be replaced.

  5. Re-calibrate the System

    After replacing components or cleaning the system, use the diagnostic service tool to clear all logged faults. Re-calibrate the MAF sensor and run an Air Management Test to verify the EGR flow rate is back within normal parameters.
