Massey Ferguson 27.07 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): EGR Valve Requested Position And Actual Position Mismatch

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) is commanding the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve to open or close to a specific percentage, but the position feedback sensor on the valve indicates that it has not reached the requested position. This is typically caused by heavy carbon buildup causing the valve to stick, a mechanical failure of the valve actuator, or a faulty position sensor.

   Visual & Mechanical Inspection: Check the EGR valve and cooler for obvious signs of external damage, coolant leaks, or severe overheating.

   Actuator Test (via Diagnostic Tool): Connect a diagnostic tool (like AGCO EDT or a compatible J1939 scanner) and load the Actuator session. Command the EGR valve to move while monitoring the "EGR Position" (EGRP) and "EGR Valve Command" (EGRC). If the actual position does not match the commanded position, the valve is likely sticking.

   Wiring & Voltage Check: Disconnect the EGR valve harness. Check for 5.0V (± 1.0V) reference voltage at the sensor supply pin. Check the ground circuit for high resistance or an open circuit. Check the signal wire for shorts to ground or battery voltage.

   Carbon Buildup Check: Remove the EGR valve and inspect the internal flap/pintle. If it is choked with soot and carbon, it may simply be physically jammed.

   Preparation

   Turn off the engine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable. Allow the engine and exhaust components to cool completely, as the EGR system gets extremely hot.

   Access the Valve

   Remove any engine cowlings, heat shields, or intake piping obstructing access to the EGR valve assembly.

   Disconnect Electricals

   Unplug the electrical connector from the EGR valve actuator/sensor. Inspect the connector pins for corrosion or pushed-out terminals.

   Remove the EGR Valve

   Unbolt the EGR valve from the exhaust manifold/EGR cooler flange. Keep track of the mounting hardware.

   Clean and Inspect

   Inspect the intake and exhaust passages. If there is excessive carbon, carefully clean the mating surfaces and passages using a plastic scraper and EGR/carburetor cleaner (ensure debris does not fall into the engine). Note: While some valves can be cleaned and freed up, OEM guidelines generally recommend replacement if the internal actuator motor or sensor has failed.

   Install the New Valve

   Mount the new EGR valve using a new OEM gasket. Torque the mounting bolts to the manufacturer's specification.

   Reassembly

   Reconnect the electrical harness, reinstall all heat shields and piping, and reconnect the battery.

   Calibration

   Use a diagnostic tool to clear the 000027.07 fault code. Some engine ECUs require an "EGR Calibration" or "Learn" procedure to be run so the ECU can learn the new valve's minimum and maximum end stops.
