27.12

Massey Ferguson 27.12 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): EGR Valve Has An Internal Issue (ECU)

Issue description

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve is responsible for recirculating cooled exhaust gas back into the engine intake to reduce NOx emissions. The ".12" Failure Mode Indicator (FMI) specifically points to an internal failure or initialization error within the intelligent device (the EGR valve's internal motor or position sensor).

Check the cause

  1. Attempt to erase the fault code using a diagnostic tool. If it clears temporarily but returns, it indicates an internal circuit failure. If it cannot be erased, check for a short or break in the wiring harness.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the EGR valve for chafing, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.

  3. Check the valve and intake manifold for excessive buildup of soot, oil mist, and unburned hydrocarbons, which can cause the valve to stick mechanically.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal.

  2. Access

Locate the EGR valve assembly on the engine (typically near the exhaust manifold and EGR cooler).

  3. Removal

Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the EGR valve. Remove the mounting bolts securing the EGR valve to the manifold/cooler. Remove the valve and discard the old metal gaskets.

  4. Cleaning

Thoroughly clean the mating surfaces on the engine side to ensure a proper seal. Remove any loose soot from the immediate intake tract.

  5. Installation

Install the new EGR valve using new OEM gaskets. Torque the mounting bolts to the engine manufacturer's specification. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  6. Calibration/Clearing

Reconnect the battery. Use an AGCO diagnostic tool to clear the 000027.12 fault code from the ECU. Some new valves may require an initialization/relearn procedure via the diagnostic tool so the ECU learns the new valve's end-stops.
