Massey Ferguson 27.13 – Engine Module (ECU): EGR Valve Is Mechanically Sticking. (ECU)

Issue description

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve is physically jammed in either the open or closed position. This is most commonly caused by heavy carbon/soot buildup inside the valve assembly that prevents the internal plunger (pintle) from moving freely, or by a mechanical failure of the valve's internal actuator.

Check the cause

  1. Check for accompanying voltage or position mismatch codes (e.g., 000027.07 'EGR Valve Requested Position And Actual Position Mismatch')

  2. Turn the ignition key to the ON position, disconnect the EGR valve harness, and check the input voltage at the connector

  3. Turn the ignition off and check the continuity between the Engine Management System (EMS) ECU connector and the EGR component connector to rule out a short circuit or broken wire

  4. Use a diagnostic scan tool to command the EGR valve to open and close. Listen for the motor actuating. If you hear the motor trying to move but failing, the valve is mechanically jammed

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Turn off the engine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery. Ensure the engine and exhaust components are completely cool.

  2. Locate and Disconnect

    Locate the EGR valve (typically mounted near the intake or exhaust manifold). Disconnect the electrical wiring harness from the valve.

  3. Removal

    Remove the mounting bolts securing the EGR valve to the engine block/manifold. Carefully pull the valve away.

  4. Inspection & Cleaning

    Inspect the valve and the manifold ports for heavy carbon buildup. You can attempt to clean the valve using a dedicated EGR/carburetor cleaner and a small brush to free the stuck pintle. Note: Do not force the valve open manually if it is electronically driven, as this can strip the internal servo gears.

  5. Replacement (If Necessary)

    If cleaning does not restore free movement, or if the internal mechanism is broken, the valve must be replaced.

  6. Installation

    Install the new (or cleaned) EGR valve using a new OEM gasket to prevent exhaust leaks. Torque the mounting bolts to the manufacturer's specification.

  7. Reassembly

    Reconnect the electrical harness and the battery.

  8. Clear Codes

    Use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the 000027.13 fault code from the ECU. Start the tractor and verify that the code does not return during operation.
