Massey Ferguson 2791.09 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): EGR Valve Communication Issue

The controller has lost data communication with the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve's electronic actuator over the CAN bus network. This is typically caused by a wiring harness failure, a damaged connector, or an internal failure of the EGR valve's electronic circuitry.

   Inspect the wiring harness leading to the EGR valve for chafing, melting, or breaks.

   Disconnect the EGR valve electrical connector and check for corrosion, pushed-back pins, or moisture intrusion.

   Test the CAN bus communication lines and power/ground supply at the EGR valve connector.

   If the wiring and voltages are correct but the fault code remains active (or does not change state when manipulated), the communication failure is internal to the EGR valve, and the valve must be replaced.

   Preparation

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable.

   Access the Valve

   Locate the EGR valve assembly on the engine block, typically mounted near the exhaust manifold and EGR cooler.

   Disconnect Electronics

   Unplug the electrical wiring harness from the EGR valve actuator.

   Removal

   Remove the mounting hardware (bolts or nuts) securing the EGR valve to the cooler/manifold. Carefully remove the valve and discard the old metal gasket.

   Cleaning

   Thoroughly clean the mating surfaces on the manifold/cooler to ensure a proper seal and prevent exhaust leaks.

   Installation

   Position the new EGR valve with a new OEM gasket. Thread the mounting hardware by hand, then torque the bolts/nuts to the manufacturer's specified torque.

   Reassembly

   Reconnect the electrical harness to the new EGR valve. Reconnect the battery.

   Calibration

   Connect a diagnostic scan tool to the tractor. Clear the 002791.09 fault code and perform an "EGR valve reset" or calibration procedure in the ECU so it can learn the new valve's parameters.
